On the Way to the Museum for All

On the Way to the Museum for All

Project duration: 31 Dec 2023–30 June 2025

Project team: Jerica Brečić, Saša Nabergoj, Biljana Ristić, Simona Žvanut

The project On the Way to the Museum for All focuses on improving the accessibility of the Škofja Loka Museum and its educational programmes for adults, with a special focus on vulnerable groups.

By participating in various accessibility training courses, partially adapting our temporary exhibitions to museum visitors with impairments and cooperating with various relevant NGOs, we have already gained some initial knowledge and experience. Our aim is to build on it by means of this project.

We have used study tours to museums in the Netherlands, Sweden and Spain as an opportunity to learn about best practices. We have chosen museums that experts consider to be fine examples of museums that make sure their museum content is physically and intellectually accessible and foster inclusion and equity in terms of community participation and involvement. As part of work meetings, the project partners present their respective museums’ accessibility strategies, work processes and the integration of accessibility concepts into the development of exhibitions, materials and educational programmes. Together we reflect on what approaches and forms of cooperation would be best suited to our collections and the local environment. In short, our aim is not only to copy the practices and programmes we have observed in other countries, but also to gain knowledge and ideas for adapting them to our own context.

Our main two objectives are to gain knowledge, experience and skills related to museum accessibility and to develop educational programmes geared to people with fewer opportunities. We also aim to integrate the concept of accessibility as a standard into all our museum exhibitions, which will contribute to a higher quality of work and to accessibility-related awareness of all the museum employees.

The project is being implemented within the Erasmus+ program: Mobility of Staff and Adult Learners in General Adult Education for Non-Accredited Institutions.
