Intertwinings – Tales from the Round Tower presents a series of exhibitions shown since the venue was opened more than three decades ago. The documentary exhibition is one of the stops on the journey of exploring the history of exhibitions at the Škofja Loka Castle.
A chronological timeline with the titles, duration dates, organisers and authors (in some places they are incomplete due to missing information) of more than ninety exhibitions runs on the walls from left to right. In addition to photographs of the exhibition openings and displays, some of the accompanying posters, invitations and publications are also on view. English translations are included only where they were part of the original exhibitions.
The renovated ground floor of the Round Tower (at the time, it was called “educational workshop”) was opened in 1989 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Škofja Loka Museum. Up until 1997, it was used for a large part of the educational programme, as reflected by the children’s drawings hanging from the ceiling. They were inspired by the artworks from the museum’s permanent collection and were part of the Castle Stories exhibition (Round Tower, 1996). According to the earliest news items published in the media, the plan all along was to also use the tower for exhibition-related activities. It did not take long to accomplish this, as is evident from the large number of exhibitions in the decade from the mid-1990s onwards. This exhibition presents only a small part of the archival material kept by the museum.
During the first few years, the programme in the Round Tower was extremely varied; in addition to the museum, the exhibitions were organised by various societies and association. Over the last decade, the concept has been enhanced – the Round Tower is now used as a venue for presenting various museum projects, small exhibitions and other activities created in collaboration with the local community, institutions and artists. In doing so, we are expanding the museum content, experimenting with different exhibition practices and responding to initiatives from the local environment.
