The Škofja Loka Passion Play Collection
The Škofja Loka Passion Play exhibition features a variety of photographic and video materials, selected objects, modern technology and design techniques, thus presenting the non-tangible heritage related to the Škofja Loka Passion Play, which is considered to be the oldest preserved dramatic text in the Slovenian language.
At present, the first part of the Škofja Loka Passion Play exhibition project is on view, while the second part will be prepared by 2021.
For curious minds:
- The Škofja Loka Passion Play is a Good Friday penitential procession which was performed in the streets and squares of the medieval town of Škofja Loka as part of preparations for Easter. The Passion Play's focus was on depicting Jesus Christ's suffering and death.
- The text of the penitential procession, preserved in a manuscript, consists of 863 rhymed verses and is divided into 13 scenes. It was written in the Škofja Loka Capuchin Monastery by Friar Romuald (Lovrenc Marušič, 1676–1748) from Štandrež pri Gorici, who was stationed in Škofja Loka as a preacher and procession leader.
- On 1 December 2016, the Škofja Loka Passion Play was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which is Slovenia's first inscription on this prestigious list.
